Leadership is the art of influencing people to adopt the aspects of a
person called a leader in two dimensions. First, leadership influences
people to act and behave in a way that the leader deems right for the
team. Secondly, leadership influences the ideology pattern of people to
conform to the leader. Leadership is therefore referred to as an art as
the leader will always find the reason to enlist the support of the
people they lead. This is achieved through the focus of the two parties
to set of goals or a common task that the leader inspires the team to

aspect of ending teams or group of people that enlist to the common
principality to maintain the ideology and influence others as well.
Leadership is an art that involves traits, interaction with people,
situational behavior and functionality. It is an art that applies
charisma and power that make people follow the leader due to the
strength of his or her leadership values and vision imparted on them by
the leader.
The main sources of leadership are position held and the person one
becomes to acquire the leadership influence. Leadership got through a
position means that the leader influences people due to the title that
he or she holds. However, the position does not guarantee the holder the
leadership skill since the art involves intrapersonal and inter personal
skill that the position cannot provide. The other source of leadership
is the personal skills and character that the leader acquires to become
a leader. It is the leadership art that is founded on the character of
the person leading a team which drives a character-based leadership
Team Leadership Styles
In a team of any kind, leadership is the main driving force of the
operations of the people in the group that has to function as one to
achieve a common goal. This is critical since the common goal is
achieved by different team members implementing differently executed
tasks. Therefore, at different positions of the team, there exists
different application of leadership skills and styles that guide
specific actions and task execution in lime with the team spirit.
Different traits of leadership are invoked including all types of
leadership styles.
The team selected is a football team with five levels of player namely
goalkeeper, defenders midfielders, strikers and the coach who is the
outside instructor player. These the players are important towards the
achievement a win that is derived by the goals scored against the
competing team. From a leadership perspective, a goal is not credited to
one player but the whole team.
The leadership style and trait that is applicable to the goalkeeper is
authoritarian towards the team members. This is because this player must
command the rest of the team when there is a threat around the goal area
and any mistake will instantly cost the team a goal against them. He has
to shout to the defenders to take cover and any player on side of the
defense area. This leadership style is also applicable on the side of
the coach who must command the team from an outside position. This way,
the coach achieves the mission of ensuring that each player performs his
team-driven task.
The next level of players is the defenders who stay put to shield the
competing team from accessing the goal area. The most appropriate
leadership style at this position is the charismatic leadership. They
must play with a lot of intimidation to the opponent while maintain a
calm direction towards the team members as well as feed the midfielders
with the ball. They have to inspire the rest of the team to attack and
score goals as they inspire confidence to the goalkeeper.
The most involving team position is the Middlefield held by a team of
players who must involve the entire team through different team
positions. Therefore, the most appropriate leadership style is
participative leadership as well as democratic leadership which include
task-oriented leadership traits. This is because these players are the
workforce of the team and they are the main coordinators of the
defenders behind them and the strikers ahead of them. Therefore, they
must incorporate the ideologies of each of the two sides. The defense
team wants the ball out of the team`s goal area while the strikers want
the ball supplied to the offensive side. The democratic trait helps them
to balance the demands of these two factions and help the in defending
and striking for goals.
The final team position is the offensive position held by strikers. They
keep the team in an offensive position that eventually achieves the team
task of winning by scoring goals. The leadership style at this position
is servant leadership since load of winning of the team rests on them.
They have to serve the team by scoring goals and also act as the first
line of defense. Therefore, leadership traits must also be task-oriented
to fulfill the team spirit of achieving a common goal of wining the
