Human Resource Management Roles

The human resource department, in the health care industry, has various
functions. One such function is recruitment and retention. The human
resource department ensures that it recruits suitable personnel, who are
competent enough in providing health care services. This is a critical
role since it helps in determining individuals that will be incorporated
into the health care industry (Niles, 2013). After a successful
recruitment of qualified personnel, the human resource department
ensures that it retains these personnel. Retention of employees is
ensured by the human resource department through rewarding employees and
ensuring the working environment is conducive. The human resource
department has a role in training and developing health staff (Niles,
2013). It is the role of the human resource department to train new
employees on how to tackle issues in the health industry. This is
through the human resource department organizing training seminars and
workshops. This adds skills and knowledge to workers and leads to the
development of health staff.
Another role played by the human resource department, in the healthcare
industry, is managing employee performance. Evaluation of employee is a
vital role of the human resource since it helps in the service delivery
without evaluation of employee performance, it is exceedingly difficult
to evaluate the overall performance of the health industry (Wolper,
2004). The human resource department develops standards for performance,
which health professionals follow. The human resource department gauges
the performance of health professionals against the set standards.
Performance below par is usually discouraged by the human resource
department since it lowers the overall performance of the healthcare
industry. However, performance above par is highly encouraged because it
improves the overall performance of the healthcare industry.
Regulatory compliance is also a critical role that the human resource
department engages in the department has to research on guidelines and
regulations that govern the healthcare system in regard to its
employees. Health related laws are vital since they provide a guide
regarding how health professionals should provide health care services
to people. The human resource department therefore, ensures that new
recruits and old staff comply with the health related laws in order to
avoid penalties emanating from their violation (Niles, 2013). Besides,
through ensuring regulatory compliance, the human resource department
eliminates the likelihood of disputes arising in the healthcare
industry, which may be brought by employees not following contracts that
they sign once they become recruited in the healthcare industry. In
performing this role, the human resource department requires working
with lawyers in the healthcare industry. For instance, following of
rules like The Medicare and Medicaid Patient Protection Act requires the
human resource department to involve health care lawyers in order to
make healthcare professionals well-versed with the legal requirements in
the healthcare industry. Furthermore, in order to ensure regulatory
compliance, the human resource department ensures engagement in legal
research associated with health care (Wolper, 2004).
In addition, the human resource department plays a vital role in
ensuring that it provides benefits and compensation for health care
professionals. The department ensures that every employee is compensated
for work done and receives his or her benefits as indicated in the
health care provisions (Wolper, 2004). Providing of benefits and
compensation to the health care professionals is a vital role of the
human resource department since it contributes to employee motivation
and thus enhances performance.
